Girl Scout Cookie Program

about: history

The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the nation's premier Business and Economic Literacy Program. Through their participation, girls develop skills they will use for their entire lives. Among the many benefits are ethical decision-making, presentation skills, learning to work on a team, and money management.

Girls Learn Important Skills!

Through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, girls set sales goals, manage inventory, learn money management, and develop marketing skills. Essentially, the girls run their own business! Girl Scout cookie sale activities give girls the courage to approach people by working at her troop's cookie shop or going door-to-door with other girls from her troop. A girl who might feel she isn't good with numbers can build her confidence by keeping track of sales and learning to make change. Girls develop character by learning to work as a team and fulfill a commitment. Whether a girl is dreaming of becoming a doctor, teacher, businesswoman, superstar athlete, or president of the United States, the Girl Scout Cookie Program gives them the self-esteem they need to reach for the stars!

All of the revenue after paying the baker remains in the area where the cookies are sold and directly or indirectly benefits Girl Scouts in those local communities. Girl Scout cookie proceeds are used for many purposes, including maintaining campsites and providing travel financial assistance for girls; providing leadership development for adult volunteers; and providing support for special membership initiatives. Individual troops/groups retain a portion of their Girl Scout cookie sale proceeds. Prior to the sale, girls vote on how they might spend the money they will earn and then set goals and strategies to reach those goals. Example of troop/group activities funded by troop proceeds include special trips to museums or exhibitions, overnight stays at camp, and community service projects. Additionally, "Cookie Dough" (cookie credits) are given to individual girls to apply to such activities as camp or event fees.

Selling Girl Scout cookies is a voluntary activity. Each girl who participates must provide written parental/guardian consent and receives information and training about her council's Girl Scout Cookie Program activities and safety guidelines.
